Montreal Roses top Ottawa Rapid on late winner

Noémi Paquin scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute as Montreal Roses FC defeated Ottawa Rapid FC 3-2 in Northern Super League action on Sunday.

In a matchup of the league’s best two teams, Montreal (11-4-4) gave itself a four-point cushion from Ottawa (10-6-3) in the standings.

Elyse Bennett opened the scoring in the fourth minute for the Roses, with Lisa Pechersky making it a 2-0 game in the 17th minute.

However, Johanne Fridlund answered for Ottawa in the 30th minute to trim the deficit.

Keera Melenhorst tied the game in the 61st minute.

AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild battle to scoreless draw

AFC Toronto played to a 0-0 draw against last-place Calgary Wild FC, falling short in their chance to climb the standings.

Third-place Toronto (9-5-5) could have moved past Ottawa into second with a win, with Ottawa only point ahead. Ottawa fell 3-2 to Montreal Sunday.

Toronto outshot Calgary (2-12-5) 22-10 in total shots but only 5-4 in on-target shots.

The home side entered Sunday on a two-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Calgary extended its unbeaten run to five games (1-0-4) and has not lost since Aug. 1, the second of back-to-back losses to Toronto that week.
