A 48-year-old Hamilton man known to police now faces a manslaughter charge after the elderly victim of an “unprovoked” assault earlier this week died of his injuries in hospital.

And Hamilton Police said the suspect, who has no home address, was out on the streets with eight probation orders to his name.

Cops said they were able to identify a suspect shortly after the attack and located him in the immediate area. He was taken into custody without incident, police added.
Gerald Deschamps was initially charged Wednesday with aggravated assault and eight counts of failing to comply with probation.
On Friday, police said the assault charge was upgraded to manslaughter.
The investigation remains ongoing, cops added.
