COLLAPSE OF ENTRY-LEVEL JOBS: CMAP RESEARCH REVEALS TWO IN THREE JUNIOR CONSULTANT ROLES ARE NOW SATURATED BY SENIOR TALENT

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — As AI-driven shifts reshape professional services, new research from professional services automation platform CMap reveals a growing crisis for entry-level talent: two-thirds of applicants for junior business consultant roles are seasoned, senior professionals. This saturation creates severe barriers for recent graduates securing entry-level roles.

CMap analyzed AI data from 19 of the largest sectors in the US by categorizing data into three pillars: current use, employee enhancement, and future use, to determine an overall AI adoption score and also compare it to the national average. Alongside this, CMap analyzed job listings for junior business consultants to understand the ratio of junior to senior applicants across the consultancy sector.

Entry-level vacancies increasingly demand senior capabilities earlier. Findings show junior listings average one in five senior skills, primarily strategy planning or data narration, with select postings requiring up to four.

Behind this bottleneck is rapid AI adoption. Professional services ranks second overall in AI adoption with a score of 91/100, driven by workflow integration to enhance workforce productivity.

The sector also scored 92/100 for current AI use. Nearly 39% of businesses deploy AI in core functions, mostly research and development, nearly double the 20% national average. Employees primarily utilize generative AI for document writing and editing.

Regarding workplace transformation, professional services scored 100/100. While 16% of firms replace staff tasks with AI to boost productivity, 61% use AI as a supportive tool to supplement tasks.

The sector leads national averages for AI efficiency: over 10% of firms report significant task execution via AI, compared to 7% nationally.

Despite these shifts, recruitment continues growing. Boutique consultancies lead expansion with 4.61% year-on-year growth, outperforming mid-sized firms at 3.03%.

Jon Stead, CEO of CMap, said:

“Junior talent is facing increasing challenges in today’s job market. Rather than sidelining entry-level opportunities and focusing solely on boosting productivity and efficiency, companies should harness AI to upskill the workforce and assist with current workloads.

“Our report shows that traditional structures continue to be redefined and the job market is increasingly centred around AI. Now, nearly two-thirds of junior consultant applicants are senior professionals, and as the sector is fast to adopt AI, the landscape is changing fast. Young talent and the workforce must stay ahead, not only maintaining their skills but upskilling in an effort to level the playing field.

“For consultancies, AI is beginning to shift firms into a new era. Over 15% of consultancy firms have now completely replaced some employee tasks with AI capability, and over 60% use AI to supplement and aid human delivery. Whilst many consultancies have pivoted to offer AI services to their clients, they have missed fundamental opportunities to leverage themselves as the second most exposed and adopters of AI in the US Market.”
