TD chief operating officer Turan to depart after less than a year

Toronto-Dominion Bank TD-T chief operating officer Taylan Turan is leaving after less than a year overseeing the bank’s transformation strategy as it addressed failures in its anti-money-laundering procedures.

Mr. Turan joined TD at the end of last September as the bank unveiled its overhaul strategy aimed bolstering its growth while addressing penalties and requirements levied by U.S. regulators and law enforcement. He was tasked with streamlining and developing the bank’s key operations, and leading a transformation office to drive TD’s focus on speed, simplicity and efficiency.

Since joining the bank, Mr. Turan helped implement those plans, strengthened its operations, extended its AI leadership and built capabilities to bolster growth, the lender said in a release Thursday.

“I want to thank Taylan for his partnership and leadership and wish him the very best for the future,” TD chief executive officer Raymond Chun said in a statement.

Previously, Mr. Turan was the COO at HSBC Holdings PLC. He was also global head of retail banking and worked for the bank in London and Turkey. He previously worked at Citigroup Inc. and Barclays PLC.

TD also announced a series of senior leadership changes, effective Sept. 4.

It promoted senior executive vice-president of global technology and solutions Vlad Shpilsky to lead the unit as group head, tasked with advancing digital initiatives.

The bank also tapped TD Securities senior executive vice-president of corporate development and chief financial officer Renu Gupta as the bank’s senior executive vice-president and chief strategy and commercial officer. The role will focus on accelerating TD’s strategy, growth and execution, including enterprise strategy, corporate development, digital assets, payments, partnerships and procurement.

Paul Whitehead was appointed senior executive vice-president of global corporate services in addition to his current mandate overseeing global client and colleague experience, transformation, enterprise real estate and marketing. He will take on responsibility for global corporate affairs and enterprise AI.
