Patrick Kane sets NHL mark for most points by US-born player

Move over Mike Modano, Patrick Kane is now the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history.

The playmaking Detroit Red Wings forward passed Modano, a former Dallas Stars and Minnesota North Stars great, to achieve that milestone Thursday against the Washington Capitals at Little Caesars Arena in Motown.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native’s assist on a Ben Chiarot slap-shot goal gave him 1,375 points in 1,342 regular season games. Modano, a Hall of Famer from Livonia, Mich., amassed 1,374 points in 1,499 games.

“I could not be more proud for you,” Modano said in a pre-recorded message shown on the videoboards during the game, which the Capitals won 4-3 in a shootout.

Kane was mobbed by teammates after the Chiarot goal, which gave him 24 assists to go with eight goals in 40 games this season as the Red Wings chase the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Atlantic Division lead.

Record stood for more than 18 years

He then raised his stick to the crowd with the spotlight on him, while appearing to tear up.

Modano held the mark for more than 18 years after passing high-scoring defenceman Phil Housley for the same record in 2007 at the age of 40. Kane, meanwhile, reached the milestone a little more than two months after turning 37.

Kane was the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft before helping the Chicago Blackhawks win three Stanley Cups. He was the Calder Trophy winner as the NHL’s top rookie in 2007-08 and later claimed the Hart Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and Art Ross Trophy, all in one stellar 2015-16 season.

Kane is also a four-time all-star and was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP in 2013.

Kane joined the Blackhawks in 2023-24, putting up 47 and 59 points the last two seasons. He is fourth amongst active NHL players in career points and 27th all-time in that category behind the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin.
