Man wanted in Oshawa murder, Peterborough slaying charged

A man sought in a fatal stabbing in Oshawa earlier this week has been arrested in Peterborough, where he faces charges for another homicide.

Peterborough cops said 44-year-old Michael Waterman was taken into custody around 3 p.m. on Friday.

He was found at a home in the Dalhousie and Alymer Sts. area. Police said an officer who attended the scene called out to the suspect, at which point he exited the home and surrendered to police.

He has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a homicide in Peterborough on Dec. 6.

Waterman was also wanted for second-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in Oshawa on Tuesday.

Around 4:15 a.m. that day, Durham Regional Police officers responded to a call in the area of Park Rd. S. and John St. in Oshawa after a man was found on the roadway suffering from stab wounds.

Jeremy Russell, 44, was taken in life-threatening condition to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died. He is Durham’s ninth homicide of the year.

Nicholas Robbins, 33, of Oshawa, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and police said a second suspect, Waterman, was wanted for the same charge.

Cops say the three men are all known to each other.

Murder in Peterborough

Waterman has been on the lam since being named earlier this month by Peterborough cops as one of three accused in the Dec. 6 homicide.

Around 6 a.m. on that day, police were called to an apartment building at 212 Brock St. where a 33-year-old man with severe head injuries was located in an apartment. He died at the scene.

Police said Waterman is wanted for second-degree murder in that case.

On Dec. 18, officers executed a warrant at a residence in Belleville and another suspect, Peter Pople, 28, of Peterborough, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Also on Dec. 18, a third suspect, Kaya Coughlin, 29, of Peterborough, was located and arrested at Trinity Community Centre, at Reid and Simcoe Sts. in Peterborough, and charged with manslaughter.

Toronto man charged after tent set on fire with person inside

A 36-year-old Toronto man has been charged after allegedly deliberately setting a tent and mattress on fire downtown, leading to a victim being hospitalized with critical injuries.

Toronto Police responded on Friday at 6:11 a.m. to a call for a fire in the Charles and Yonge Sts. area, near Bloor and Yonge Sts.

Police alleged that the accused deliberately set a tent and mattress on fire and also threw various items on top of the tent to accelerate the fire.

Cops said the victim was pulled from the burning tent and transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Loewen Wolfe was arrested and charged with mischief – endanger life, arson damage property, arson disregard for human life, arson cause bodily harm, and failure to comply with probation.
