Lindsay Clancy murder trial has divided US on whether she’s victim or criminal

The case became a flashpoint for gender discussion, too, with opinions often divided along gender lines.

Father-of-three Vincenzo Vazquez, who followed the trial from Illinois, believes gender has a lot to do with Clancy’s treatment, doubting that the public would show similar sympathy if a father were on trial for the same charges.

“Whatever someone is dealing with, I don’t think there’s ever an appropriate time or an excuse or a justification to, you know, kill children of your own, or kill any children,” he said.

He said he felt “very sad and a little disgusted to see how many people are rallying behind her”, adding: “I think people should be out there rallying for justice for the children. They’re three beautiful kids that had a future in front of them.”

The decision to declare a mistrial after seven days of deadlocked jury deliberations has left the status of the case – and Clancy’s future – unclear. A hearing at the end of the month could establish whether prosecutors will move ahead with second trial or attempt to reach a plea deal.
