US President Donald Trump hosted a second attempt of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after the first event in April was interrupted by a gunman opening fire near a security checkpoint.
A federal agent was hit, but was saved by his bullet-proof vest.
The 31-year-old suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was charged with attempting to assassinate the president.
The event, designed to celebrate press freedom, was attended by hundreds of journalists.
The BBC’s Bernd Debusmann Jr was in attendance and shared his account of how the evening unfolded.
