Davies, Crépeau will miss Canada’s World Cup homecoming games in Toronto, Montreal

Canada’s men’s soccer team will be without some key players for a pair of friendlies in Toronto and Montreal.

Captain Alphonso Davies and goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau are both absent from the 26-player roster released Tuesday by head coach Jesse Marsch.

Canada Soccer says in a release that Bayern Munich star Davies was “unavailable for selection due to the celebration of his marriage and honeymoon” while Orlando City’s Crépeau could not be called into camp due to a personal matter.

Also absent is centre back Moïse Bombito, who announced last month that he would undergo another surgery on his left tibia after pushing through pain at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Marsch’s squad includes 17 players who were on the national team that made a historic World Cup run before being eliminated by Morocco in the round of 16.

“This team left everything out there at the World Cup, and now we get to do it again in front of the fans who were with us every step of the way,” Marsch said in a release. “That’s what these matches are about. This summer changed what’s possible for this program, and these matches are our chance to build on it.”

Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio returns after scoring a stoppage-time goal that lifted Canada to a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the round of 32 and striker Cyle Larin is back after a hot start to the English Championship season.

Marsch’s roster also features up-and-coming talents in Toronto FC defender Richard Chukwu and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Jeevan Badwal. Also included are veteran midfielders Junior Hoilett and Samuel Piette, who were not part of the 2026 World Cup run but have been stalwarts of the men’s senior program for many years.

Canada, currently ranked 30th in the world, is set to face No. 49 Chile in Toronto on Sept. 26 before taking on No. 50 Peru in Montreal on Oct. 3. The Canadians will then face the 16th-ranked United States in St. Paul, Minn., on Oct. 6.
