Canada earned a semifinal berth at the under-18 women’s world hockey championship on Thursday with a 17-0 blowout win over Japan at Tikkurila Arena in Vantaa, Finland.
Chloe Primerano had two goals and three assists. Maxine Cimoroni and Stryker Zablocki each had hat tricks and Amelia Wilkinson made four saves for the shutout.
Caileigh Tiller scored twice while Sara Manness, Sofa Ismael, Sydney Sawyer, Hayley McDonald, Anais Leprohon, Maddie McCullough and Rachel Piggott added singles.
The women’s U18 team, which tied its record for most goals in a game, outshot Japan 76-4.
Canada will next play the Czech Republic on Saturday. The Czechs advanced with a 6-0 win over host Finland.
The other semifinal will pit the United States against Sweden. The Americans topped Slovakia 9-1 and Sweden defeated Switzerland 4-1.
The medal games were scheduled for Sunday.
