Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani advanced to the round of 16 in women’s doubles play at the U.S. Open with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Italy’s Sara Errani and Austria’s Lilli Tagger on Saturday.
The second-seeded Dabrowski, from Ottawa, and Stefani broke on five of their eight chances. They also saved four of Errani and Tagger’s six breakpoint opportunities.
The match took one hour 27 minutes to play.
Dabrowski — a two-time U.S. Open doubles champion (2023, 2025) — and Stefani will next play the winner of a match between American Asia Muhammad and Hungary’s Fanny Stoller against Japan’s Eri Hozumi and Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac.
Earlier in the day, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen fell 6-4, 6-4 to New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi in second-round action.
Fernandez and Tjen only converted on one of their six breakpoint chances. Meanwhile, the ninth seeds Routliffe and Sutjiadi broke on three of their five opportunities.
Fernandez was also ousted in third-round women’s singles play on Friday by third-seeded American Jessica Pegula.
