Ruck wins Pan Pacific butterfly silver, McIntosh misses 400m freestyle final

Taylor Ruck added a silver medal to her growing Pan Pacific Championships collection on Friday, finishing second in the women’s 100-metre butterfly.

The 26-year-old Kelowna athlete, who now has four medals in the summer meet, finished in 56.71 seconds, just behind of American Gretchen Walsh, who clocked a golden time of 55.15. Alexandria Perkins of Australia was third (56.75).

Summer McIntosh of Toronto missed the A final in the 400-metre freestyle earlier in the day. The 19-year-old Canadian finished ninth overall in Friday’s heats with a time of four minutes 8.56 seconds.

McIntosh holds the world record in the event at 3:54.18 and is the reigning world champion.

American Katie Ledecky posted the fastest qualifying time at 4:03.48, with New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather second at 4:04.50.

Lani Pallister of Australia won Friday night’s final in 3:58.42, while Ledecky was second in 4:00.15.

McIntosh qualified for the B final, while Canadian Ella Cosgrove also advanced after finishing 13th overall.

“I take full responsibility for my misjudgment in this morning’s heats. I will see you all in the B final tonight and thank you for your support,” McIntosh wrote on her Instagram page before the B final.

McIntosh won the B final Friday night in four minutes, 58 seconds. She was almost seven seconds ahead of runner-up Agostina Hein of Argentina. Cosgrove finished sixth in 4:10.54.

McIntosh has three medals at the meet – gold in the 400 individual medley, silver in the 200 freestyle and bronze in a relay.
