Peter Maher, who spent 33 years as the voice of the Calgary Flames, has died at 79.
The Flames confirmed Maher’s death in a release Thursday that remembered the radio broadcaster for his “unmistakable voice.”
Maher, originally from Campbellton, N.B., joined radio station CHQR as the Flames’ play-by-play voice in 1980 when the NHL team moved to Calgary from Atlanta.
He remained in the role over the decades until retiring after the 2013-14 season and became known for his catchphrases “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”
Maher called the Flames’ run to its lone Stanley Cup championship in 1989 and its Cup final appearances in 1986 and 2004.
He was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 after receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his work as an NHL broadcaster.
